One of the most common – and disconcerting – questions that comes up in our industry is “what happens to all the old graphic designers?”. Apparently ‘Life Begins at 40′, but look around your studio this morning and i’ll bet you’ll most likely see a room full of twenty & thirty somethings.
Sure some more experienced designers will leave the studios to work for themselves, move to directorial roles and others will lecture. That can’t account for them all though. While design obviously isn’t about trends, all but the very best work inevitably dates. In an increasingly fast moving profession it’s difficult to stay relevant, to continue at the top of your game.
I find it hard to imagine being a designer in twenty years time, the idea of being able to stay as passionate about design as I am now just doesn’t seem likely. That’s why I was delighted to receive the message below, bit of an inspiration.
"Hello
I thought you might be interested to see my recently launched web archive. It represents 50 years of endeavour as a graphic designer and creative director from 1960 to the present day.
The archive is conceived as an educational resource and as a contribution to the online preservation and curation of British Graphic Design history.
I hope you find something in it to interest you.
